Keppel now GE Money Bank

General Electric’s (GE) finance arm considers the Philippines a “good place” to be at the moment, a company official said.

This belief is the reason General Electric (GE) Consumer Finance entered the banking scene by buying all 30 Keppel Bank branches in Metro Manila and Metro Cebu, said chief operations officer John Hickey.

“There is a significant growth in the gross domestic product (GDP) (in the Philippines) year on year. It’s (Cebu) a good place to be,” he said in a speech during the formal opening of three GE Money Bank branches in Cebu.

Cebuano firms good model of entrepreneurial success

A Manila-based businessman expressed belief that Cebu is a model of entrepreneurship in the country.

“Cebuano companies are very good examples of Filipino entrepreneurship.

The companies here are continually doing business despite political challenges. Cebu, in general, is doing well because you do not allow yourself to become affected by political bickering,” said Robert Trota, Philippine Franchising Association (PFA) and Max’s Restaurant president.

“There have been talks among businessmen that Cebu is a good testing ground. If you make it here, you can make it anywhere,” he said in an interview outside the InTourPreneur 2006 Franchising Conference at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino yesterday.

Correcting the negative connotation of spa and massage services remains to be a major challenge of the spa and wellness industry in Cebu.

This is why the newly-organized Spa and Wellness Association of Cebu (Swac) is doing its best to change the “image,” that massage and spa establishments provide “extra” services that are sexual in nature.

Apart from this, Swac also intends to address other problems, such as pirating of therapists.

‘Pinoy creativity is RP’s real asset in ICT dev’t’

As players in the information technology (IT) manufacturing and supply sector see a big potential for IT in Cebu, they urge all stakeholders—private and government—in the country to work together in raising the quality of education and to focus on real assets of Filipinos.

Officials of the Computer Manufacturers, Distributors and Dealers Association of the Philippines (Comddap) pointed out yesterday that Cebu is one of the biggest IT markets outside Manila, both in the areas of education and business process outsourcing.

Some officials of the organization were in Cebu to promote the eighth ICT (information and communication technology) expo, known as Comdapp Cebu 2006, to be held on June 22 to 24 at SM City Cebu.

“Cebu is one of the fastest growing (ICT) areas with a good manufacturing base, education that is at par with Manila and (the ability of Cebuanos) to speak good English,” said Comdapp immediate past president Wesley Ngo in a press conference at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino
