Sinulog, Asean Summit to Cause Room Shortage in Cebu Hotels

The Sinulog festivities and the 12th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit, both scheduled for January, will cause a shortage of rooms in hotels in Metro Cebu.

The demand for rooms in January is expected to reach 7,000, said Marco Protacio, president of the Hotels, Restaurants, and Resorts Association of Cebu (HRRAC).
Cebu, however, only has around 5,000 hotel rooms, Protacio said.

The room shortage would force hotels to apply a first come, first served policy when entertaining guests next month, he added.

Protacio said clients who are able to pay in advance would have priority.

However,
the policy would not apply to delegates of the ASEAN summit, whose
reservations were carried over from December, the original summit
schedule, said Protacio, who is also the general manager of the
Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino.

Here is an Excerpt on the new book.

Evan Thomas on the Last Great Sea Battle - Newsweek Books - MSNBC.com

Nov. 13, 2006 issue - During the Second World War, it was very unusual to be standing on the deck of an American warship and actually see a Japanese vessel. Most sea battles in the Pacific War were fought at night or from great distances—by carrier-based planes flying many miles from their ships. But shortly after dawn on the morning of October 25, 1944, the men of the USS Johnston, a destroyer patrolling near Leyte Gulf in the Philippine Islands, saw something the survivors would never forget.

Battle of Leyte Gulf was said to b the largest naval battle in history.

Live Talk: Thomas on a WWII Naval Battle - Newsweek Books - MSNBC.com

During World War II, nearly all sea battles in the Pacific were fought at great distances by carrier-based planes flying many miles from their ships. A bloody exception was the battle of Leyte Gulf, where a dozen Japanese battleships and cruisers engaged a lightly armored convoy of American cruisers and destroyers. In four days of fighting in the seas around the Philippine island of Leyte, Allied forces scored a decisive victory over the Japanese in what was to be the last major naval engagement of the war.
