Threat or no threat, the fact that the Asean leaders and partners are attending the summit is a vote of confidence in the Philippines and a reaffirmation of the international partnership against terrorism. The summit is expected to be capped by the signing of the Convention on Counterterrorism to prevent and help investigate attacks by terrorists in the region.

SEVENTEEN heads of state have confirmed their attendance in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and East Asian summits in Cebu this week, according to a list released by Malacañang.

They are Haji Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei Darussalam, Samdech Hun Sen of Cambodia, Dr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono of Indonesia, Bouasone Bouphavanh of Laos, Dato Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi of Malaysia;

General Soe Win of Myanmar, Lee Hsien Loong of Singapore, General Surayud Chulanont of Thailand, Nguyen Tan Dung of Vietnam, John Winston Howard of Australia.

Premier Wen Jiabao of China, Dr. Manmohan Singh of India, Shinzo Abe of Japan, Roh Moo Hyun of Korea, Helen Clark of New Zealand, and Jose Ramos Horta of Timor Leste.

PM to go to Philippines for ASEAN summit

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh goes to Cebu City in the Philippines on Saturday on a three-day visit to attend the India-ASEAN and East Asian summits that will energise India’s growing economic and strategic ties with the region. Intensification of economic relations, negotiations for a Free Trade Area (FTA) agreement, enhanced cooperation in areas of entrepreneurship development, English language training and information technology will be key themes of the India-ASEAN summit to be held on Sunday.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung will head the Vietnamese delegation at the ASEAN Summit at the invitation of Philippine president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

The 12th summit will be held in Cebu City, the Philippines, from January 12 to 15.

Prime Minister Dung will also attend related meetings, including the ASEAN +3 summit with China, Japan and the Republic of Korea; the ASEAN +1 summit separately with China, Japan, South Korea and India; and the 2nd East Asian Summit.

Officials on Tuesday described as “successful” the final-dry run of traffic in preparation for the January 12 formal opening of the 12th Summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) here.

Ambassador Marciano Paynor Jr., secretary general of the National Organizing Committee (NOC), told a press conference that the dry-run “met most of our expectations,” particularly in the management of traffic in major routes to be used by the convoy of vehicles for leaders of ASEAN during their stay in Cebu.

International Media Center in CICC Reopens for the ASEAN Summit

The National Organizing Committee of the 12th ASEAN Summit has announced the reopening on Monday of the International Media Center (IMC) and the International Broadcasting Center (IBC) at the newly completed Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) in Mandaue City.

More than 1,000 local and foreign journalists are expected to cover the ASEAN Summit, which has been rescheduled to Jan. 10-15.

Senior officials and economic ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will meet ahead of their leaders from January 9 to 11.
