Summer vacation in Boracay? Think Malapascua

Tuesday, February 27th, 2007

Malapascua is described by the lonely planet as “The Thinking Man’s Boracay” and is the next greatest beach discovery after Boracay. It is like Boracay 5 /10 years ago or I would describe it as Boracay less the nightlife (very quiet at night!) . The sand is sugary fine and the waters are calm such that you can imagine you have a large swimming pool that you can swim for miles. Malapascua  is a good thing to do adventure in time for the summer season and specially holy week which is the peak season for these beaches.

Malapascua, is an island off the northern tip of Cebu Province, in the Philippines. It’s about 130 kms. (80 mi.) from the City of Cebu to Maya and about 30 mins. pumpboat ride, an outriggered boat to the island. Electricity and transportation in the island is scarce.

The island has long been visited by European tourist mostly from Switzerland and Germany, since it was being promoted by tourist who have been to the island. It was just recently that many local tourist, myself included, who have also visited this Island paradise.

Malapascua offers a crystal clear waters, white sand, fresh catch and best of all, the tranquility that the island has to offer. Dive spots are numerous around Malapascua with some World War II wrekage and rich marine life.

Boljoon Church, its wonder

Saturday, February 24th, 2007

Boljoon is one of the oldest towns in the South. And it is also the most quaint and picturesque. Its narrow coastal plains is bordered by cliffs and luxuriant hills which has a commanding view of Bohol Strait.

According to Marin Morales, the town was created in 1598. The parish was established a year later. But this was disputed by Fr. Blanco, asserting that the parish was founded in 1600. The church of Boljoon was started by Fr. Manuel Cordero and completed by Fr. Julian Bermejo, who also built the convent that was finished in 1841. The convent is L-shaped like a monastery surrounded by walls and tile roof.

Kawasan, Beautiful as Always!

Kawasan Falls
Badian, SouthWestern Cebu, the Philippines

Now tell me, is this beautiful or what? Kawasan is definitely a must-see place here in Cebu..it’s about 2-2.5 hrs from the city by vehicle  You can also go hiking from Osmeña Peak to Kawasan falls which can take about 4-6 hrs. For me, it’s the best place to unwind here in Cebu. When you get to Badian which is located on the southern part of Cebu island, you will have to hike some 20-25minutes before reaching the first falls. You’ll be amazed when you get there and I’m very sure after the long walk you would want to go for a dip immediately.

Some 5-10 minutes treak going up above the first falls, you’d be able to reach the other 3 sub-falls and also the source.  See more of Kawasan Falls pics here..

Beautiful as always… i hope they can really preserve this place.

Cebu’s Mango is the Best!

Tuesday, February 20th, 2007

Cebu stakes a claim as having one of the finest mangoes in the world. Yes, other varieties in Asia may compete with sweetness, but Cebu mangoes are decidedly not fibrous like the others- just luscious, with roll-in-the-tongue texture. Otherwise referred commercially as the Philippine mangoes. At the Banilad fruit stand, a kilo is about 60 pesos (~$1.1) while it is only 40 pesos in the other dry markets. But guaranteed to be SWEET (not sour) and ripened naturally (without carburo or what we’d like to say, calcium carbide). The Philippines cannot enter into the US market because there are lobbies against it from other countries traditionally selling to the US. Plus there are high insecticidal standards which the Philippines still have to meet. Trade barriers are a complicated issue and unless they are settled, the Philippine mangoes are handicapped due to tariff hence the expensive price.(From Farl)

The fruit flesh of a ripe mango contains about 15% sugar, up to 1% protein, and significant amounts of vitamins A, B and C. The taste of the fruit is very sweet, with some cultivars having a slight acidic tang. The texture of the flesh varies markedly between different cultivars; some have quite a soft and pulpy texture similar to an over-ripe plum, while others have a firmer flesh much like that of a cantaloupe or avocado, and in some cultivars the flesh can contain fibrous material. Mangoes are very juicy; the sweet taste and high water content make them refreshing to eat, though somewhat messy. (From Wikipedia)

Of course, it’s one of my favorite fruits! I really  love mangoes. I can make a lot of things out of mangoes, from ice cream to mango float to mango shake to toppings on oatmeal or as an accompaniment to suman. Mango is a very versatile fruit. Nothing can quite compare with the mangoes that we have here in Cebu aside from the Mangoes that the Guimaras Island produces.

Cebu Imports Pork to Meet Huge Demand

Processed pork being served in most dinner tables in Cebu are not just from locally-grown pigs as traders are forced to buy from France, Canada and Germany to cope with huge demand for pork in the province.

Virginia Food Inc. president Felix O. Tiukinhoy Jr. said the household demand for pork in Cebu is so huge that local piggery farms have their hands full feeding the domestic supply.

Puso bai! (hanging rice)

Monday, February 19th, 2007

Puso is a coconut leaf-wrapped rice takeaways in Cebu. I think it is only found in the province but may have spread to other Visayas islands. They are now found in neighboring Bohol, Leyte and parts of Mindanao like Cagayan. Indonesia or Malaysia might have some sweet rice delicacies wrapped in coconut leaf but not rice per se. A must have in the beach!

Mostly, partnered with bbq or inasal na manok.  convenient na barato pa! kaon ta bai!

Sun.Star Cebu - Cabaero: Complementary development

METRO Cebu is one of the fastest growing areas in the country. As the cities that comprise the metropolitan area grow in population, infrastructure and economic activity, the pressure on their local leaders expands as well.

The demand for more roads, schools, hospitals and other vital infrastructure will continue, except that in a bustling metropolis there would be a need to make these development plans comprehensive and complementary.
