Sun.Star Manila - Central Visayas exporters set double digit growth over 4 years

EXPORTERS in Cebu City have targeted double digit growth a year between 2007 and 2010 and make the city the export hub of central and southern Philippines in four years.

The target will translate to Central Visayas’ share of US$2.2 billion in total exports for the whole of last year to US$3.7 billion by the end of 2010.

John Paul Chiongbian, president of Dev Asia Corp. (DAC)—Paseo’s holding company—said the bullish tourism industry encouraged them to put up an additional 7,200-square-meter property to expand Paseo.

Paseo, located along F. Cabahug St., Mabolo, Cebu City, sits on a 6,000-square-meter long-term leased property.

US-based global device networking company Smartmatic’s plan to set up shop in the Philippines particularly in Cebu within the year or next year will open at least 14,000 information technology (IT) jobs in the province.

Jonji Villa, Smartmatic director for Election System Business, said Cebu is an attractive place to set up the business.

“Apart from the accessibility of Cebu, and a good telecommunication services, Cebu has a very large population of English speaking IT professionals, which is very important in the business,” Villa said.
