San Remegio Beach Club’s Marine Dive Center

PLANNING on scuba diving? The San Remigio Beach Club recently opened the doors of their Marine Dive Center.

San Remigio boasts of Cebu’s longest shore line so one can expect large coral heads which form the habitat for thousands of beautiful fish. Its underwater terrain holds six caves, a four-kilometer reef that has a wall with a 40 to 60 meter drop.

Larger organisms can also be found on these reefs, feeding on the smaller fish. More…

Mantalongon plans to draw more tourists

    With its cool climate and its 1,000 meter elevation above sea level, barangay Mantalongon in the municipality of Dalaguete has been known as the “Summer Capital of Cebu.”

But Joe Canton, a former tourism attaché from Mantalongon, said much infrastructure is still needed to make the place live up to the title. The provincial government recognized Mantalongon in a 2006 resolution of the Provincial Board.

Malapascua to host Ceva beach volleyball

IT IS about time that a big-scale beach volleyball competition be held here in Cebu.

Cebu Volleyball Association and the Cebu Provincial Government want to showcase the beaches that are perfect for the sport as they host the first Beach Volleyball Tournament Mayor’s Cup in Malapascua Island this coming Black Saturday and Easter Sunday.

Six-star luxury resort soon to open in Daan Bantayan

    A six-star luxury resort will soon be opened in the northern part of Cebu, as MSY Holdings Corporation has started to develop the 12-hectare beach property in barangay Agujo, Daan Bantayan.

This will be the first six-star boutique resort to be built in Cebu that will offer a very exclusive 18-room luxury accommodation.

Europeans to visit Central Visayas for a diving expedition

    The Diving hotspots in the Visayas have caught the interest of European divers, as 65 of them will be coming to Cebu in November to experience the good diving areas here.

This was announced by the National Association of Independent Travel Agencies (Naitas) chairman Robert Lim Joseph, in a press conference held Saturday night at the Ralph’s restaurant.

According to Joseph, these high-end European divers will hit the waters of Bohol, Apo Island in Dauin, Oriental Negros and they will make Cebu as its gateway to reach these places.

Joseph said Naitas will be getting good deals with business hotels here in Cebu, either Marco Polo Plaza Hotel or Holiday Plaza, as these divers are requesting to stay at a business hotel in Cebu, before they will kick off with the diving expedition in Bohol and Oriental Negros.

Foreign resort developers eyeing properties in Cebu

A French resort chain, Club Med (Club Méditerranée) has explored Cebu, for a possible establishment of a resort facility here.

Department of Tourism (DOT) chief Joseph Ace Durano said that a team of officers from Club Med recently came to look out for a possible expansion here. However, the group prefers to take over an existing property.

At this time, Durano said there is no resort property that is being offered for sale and that the group is still on the process of looking for what they want.

What is important, he said is more and more international chains have expressed their interest to be present in Cebu. More…

Suroy-Suroy sa Sugbo 2007 Southern Heritage Trail, a Big Big Success!

About 21 towns in southern Cebu had the chance to showcase their unique culture &  history and delicacies to local and foreign tourists to the Suroy-Suroy sa Sugbo Southern Heritage Trail that was started last Friday (July 27-29). 

Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia accompanied over 200 foreign and local tourists around Cebu’s southern towns.  Also with the Governor are Liloan Mayor Duke Frasco, Region 7 DOT Director, Dawnie Roa, governor’s daughter Atty. Christine  Garcia, the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industries Officers and Members, the Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industries and group of business sectors joined the said suroy-suroy.

The tour kicked off in Minglanilla, then proceeded to Naga, San Fernando, Sibonga, Argao, Dalaguete, Alcoy and Boljoon, where the group toured in the famous Boljoon church.
On the second day of the tour, July 28, started from  Oslob, Down to Santander, Samboan, Ginatilan, Alegria and ended at Badian.  At Badian the group visited the famous Kawasan Falls.

On the third day (July 29), Suroy-Suroy group proceeded to Moalboal, Alcantara, Ronda, Dumanjug, Barili, Carcar, down to Talisay as the last town visit and returned to the Capitol.

Cordova

Cordova is a coastal town in the southern part of Mactan Island. It is 7 kms. away from Lapu-Lapu City and 9 kms. away from Cebu City. The channels of Cordova is known as one of the best diving havens in the country. Cordova has a total land area of 780.38 has. bounded by Camotes Sea in the east and Bohol Strait in the south. The main livelihood of its people is fishing.

A lot of fascinating spots entertain the local and foreign tourists who happened to visit the town: the CORDOVA MARINE PARK site, the islets of Tongo, Lava and Shell, Nalusuan Island and the most popular gilutongan Island & Sun Beach Resort and Cordova Reef Village Resort.

The primary means of transportation are tricycles; though, jeepneys are occasionally available.

 Major road networks are either asphalted or cemented. However , some barangay roads are still gravel-filled.

Protection of Visayan Seas lobbied

    The Philippines is the “epicenter of the richest marine biodiversity in the world,” according to a 10-year study by international marine experts.

Kent Carpenter, associate professor of biological sciences at the Old Dominion University in Virginia, USA, and Victor Springer, Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History, said the Indo-Malay-Philippine Archipelago (IMPA) has long been considered the richest marine biodiversity area in the whole world.

But Carpenter said in a Save the Seas forum at the University of Cebu that he did not expect to find the Philippines at the extreme center of this wealth.

“I was surprised because I was expecting it to be the Sulawesi-Moluccan area,” Carpenter said.

He said the central Philippines, which includes Cebu, Bohol and Iloilo, has the area with the highest “diversity” and “endemism,” which means, there are more organisms “endemic” or “exclusively native” here, he said. More…

P200-M beach villa to rise in Tuburan town

The construction of a new beach villa in Tuburan, Cebu is viewed as a “job generator” for the town’s residents, a public official said Monday.

Vice Mayor Rose Marie Suezo said the presence of the Apalan Beach Villas will enable jobless locals to find another way of providing for the needs of their families.

“Although there were no specific conversations with the developers on the terms of giving jobs to the locals, I am hopeful that they (developers) will help us,” Suezo told Cebu Daily News.
