PhilNITS Certification Exam in Cebu

The Philippine National IT Standards Foundation (PhilNITS) will conduct the PhilNITS certification exams on April 2 in Cebu and eight other testing centers across the country. Venue for the said exam will be at the University of San Carlos - Talamban Campus, Cebu City .

Other testing centers in the country include Manila, Tuguegarao, Baguio, Cabanatuan, Los Baños, Naga,
Cagayan de Oro and Zamboanga.

PhilNITS Foundation is implementing a Certification Program on the Fundamentals of IT (FE), adopted from the Japan Information Technology Engineers Examination Center (JITEC) an office under the Information Technology Promotion Agency, Japan.

3G Now in Cebu

Smart subscribers in Cebu City may now enjoy the 3rd generation technology in mobile communication as Smart Communications, Inc. picked Cebu City , together with Manila, Baguio and Davao, as a trial area for its 3G technology service before going full blast nationwide as soon as all the necessary infrastructure are in place.

Subscribers with 3G-capable handsets will enjoy the 3G services on a free trial basis. These services include video calling, video streaming, high speed Internet browsing and special 3G content downloads. This makes Smart the first mobile operator in the country to offer 3G services to the public ahead of its archival, Globe Telecoms.

Cebu is Groomed as Medical Transcription Hub

Data transcription is a fast-growing outsourcing business in the country. Along with contact centers, data transcription is a sunshine industry in the country absorbing only 1 percent of America’s staggering US$25 billion market.

The country hopes to get a substantial portion of that pie by utilizing its vast pool of graduates of medical-related courses who only either end up employed in low-paying jobs or becoming a domestic helper in Singapore or Hong Kong. There are a lot of graduates in medical and para-medical courses in the country who can be tapped to work as medical transcriptionists, either part-time or full-time depending on the individual’s preference.

WiMax for Metro Cebu

WiFi logoThe latest wireless technology which is the fodder of wireless communication conversations today is WiMax. WiMAX is an acronym that stands for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, and according to Wikipedia, a certification mark for products that pass conformity and interoperability tests for the IEEE 802.16 standards.

Products that pass the conformity tests for WiMAX are capable of forming wireless connections between them to permit the carrying of internet packet data. It is similar to WiFi in concept, but has certain improvements that are aimed at improving performance and should permit usage over much greater distances.

LED Advertising Is Now In Cebu!

If you happened to pass by Gaisano Country Mall just recently you must notice a huge billboard you think is a huge television screen installed for Pacquiao-Morales rematch in September this year. If it were true, then it is too early to put up such expensive undertaking.

Yes, it is indeed a large screen but not of a television. It is the latest technology called LED that some advertisers adopt to get the upper hand in the competition. LED is an acronym for light emitting diode.

A light-emitting diode (LED) is a semiconductor device that emits incoherent narrow-spectrum light when electrically biased in the forward direction. This effect is a form of electroluminescence. The color of the emitted light depends on the chemical composition of the semiconducting material used, and can be near-ultraviolet, visible or infrared.

Cebu is heading right into its long-term goal - to become the call center hub in this part of the country. While it is a farfetched idea, if not impossible, to outdo Manila in its bid to become the center of business process outsourcing (BPO), Cebu is trying hard to attract call centers and medical transcription companies by putting up more IT zones.

One latest addition is the Mango Square along Gen. Maximo Ave. No less than President Arroyo proclaimed Luym-owned and managed Mango Square as an information technology (IT) building, entitling IT firms that will locate there enjoy tax perks and holidays. It was declared an IT building under Presidential Proclamation 960, issued by Arroyo on Dec. 27, 2005.

New IT Park for Lexmark

IT park for LexmarkThe Chiongbian family announced that there three lots, covering 5,192 is now proposed to be leased by Lexmark Research and Development Corporation for additional expansion. The family is asking the Export zone Authority to declare it as an IT export enterprise, and for the property to be named as Lexmark Plaza.

The proposed project is expected to cost P2.5 billion and is expected to generate employment of 450 engineers and professionals. The Chiongbian family owns the lot through Efficient Holdings Inc., (EHI).

Innove: I-Teach, I- Care

Innove Communications, a wholly owned subsidiary of Globe Telecom, launched its “I-Teach, I-Care” program at Bitoon Vocational High School, in Dumanjug, Cebu last month.

The program is in line with Innove’s thrust towards youth development and Information and Communications Technology education. Volunteer employees from Innove taught students various computer applications and the significance of the Internet as a tool to access information.

Cebu Hosts 4th Asian Forum on IT

Center of the International Cooperation for Computerization (CICC) picked Cebu in the Philippines to be the venue of the 4th edition of the Asian Forum for Information Technology (AFIT) this year.

Already groomed to be the country’s information and communications technology (ICT) hub, Cebu will, once again, boost its image as the favorite destination for investors on IT and IT-related businesses as it hosts Asia’s premier forum on IT on October 19-21 at the beautiful Plantation Bay Resort and Spa.

CICC, is a Japan-based public interest organization who primarily helps developing countries in their computerization programs and aims to narrow down the digital divide between these countries and the wired ones. Over 70 participants from about 20 Asian countries are expected to attend the forum.

Here’s a good news for ePLDT WiFi subscribers, as per The Manila Bulletin:

“The company has recently forged partnership agreements with leading operators Maxis Malaysia, Starhub, Hongkong CSL, T-Mobile USA and NTT Communications, respectively.”

WiFi Roaming coverage for ePLDT subscribers is extended to Malaysia, Singapore, Hongkong, USA and Japan.
