USC studs top on Licensure exam

WHEN one sets foot on top of a mountain, the view before him is almost infinite.

This seems to be what two Cebuanos felt recently after taking the
top positions in the January 2008 Architects Licensure Examination held
in Manila. The two architecture, graduates of the University of San
Carlos, are Junel Villanueva and Roden Adam Abella. They copped second
and fouth places, respectively. And the opportunities are beginning to
appear before them like stars glittering in the night sky.

Be the next DOST scholar

The Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) is now accepting applications for its Junior College S&T Scholarship.

The scholarship is given to 3rd year college students who are currently enrolled int he science and technology courses. 

Eligible applicants must have a general weighted average of at least 83%; currently enrolled in any of the satte colleges and universities under Science and Technology; a Filipino Citizen; have no pending immigration application and a resident of the municipality in the last four years.

Top Medical grad from Cebu stays to serve the poor

Many Filipino doctors want to go abroad and earn
dollars but the only Cebuano in the top 10 of the 2007 Physician
Licensure Examination will stay in Cebu, working in a government
hospital.

Dr. Lily Mae Quevedo Dacay, 26, said she preferred working in a
government hospital because she felt she would find great fulfillment
in serving the poor.

Dacay who graduated from the Cebu Doctors’ University in 2006, is
the 8th placer in the Physician Licensure Examination, the results of
which were announced Wednesday by the Professional Regulation Commission.

She said she would apply for her residency at the government-run
Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) in Cebu City to
specialize in either obstetrics-gynecology or internal medicine.More.inq.net

Group launches program to create IT labor pool

    TO meet the annual demand of 1,500 entry-level software developers in the province, the Cebu Educational Development Foundation for Information Technology (Cedf-it) is now in the position to launch its Bridge Course Program (BCP) this September.

The BCP, considered to be the first in the Philippines, aims to meet the growing local demand for qualified software developers since it serves as a “tipping point” in bridging the gap between those who are hired and those who are deemed as second choices, said Cedf-it senior project manager Arnold Banogon.

Citing a survey by Cedf-it in 2006, he said only 600 information technology (IT) graduates are absorbed by companies. More…

CITE adopts e-learning

With the integration of e-learning into the curriculum of the Center for Industrial Technology and Enterprise (CITE), students are now all excited to learn new concepts and skills related to their technology courses.

The e-learning modules developed by CITE in 1999 have been used by different school partners.

This school year, through the funds from the German Development Service, the school was able to convert some of its facilities into e-classrooms fully equipped with all-new browsing workstations.

3 Cebu teachers undergo faculty immersion program

The Smart Wireless Engineering Education Program (SWEEP) of Smart Communications Inc. formally implemented its faculty immersion series recently, providing special lectures, fieldworks, and hands-on activities to 24 key engineering faculty members from partner schools all over the country.

SWEEP is the first industry-academe partnership that seeks to improve the level of technology and engineering education in the country, particularly in the field of Electronics and Communications Engineering (ECE).

The program is designed to complement the school’s existing ECE programs by providing training and lectures on the latest developments in wireless technologies.

Three ECE faculty members were selected from Cebu City.

They were Rogelio Lansa of the University of Cebu-Banilad campus, Thamar Tan of the University of San Carlos and Junito Bustamante of UC-Main campus.

The Cebu participants spent their first week at the Switching Center.

Hotel, university ink pact to improve HRM course

A Hotel-Resort signed an agreement with a university to provide training facilities and teachers to hotel and restaurant management and tourism students.

Hilton Cebu Resort and Spa and the University of San Carlos (USC) sealed their partnership last Thursday to “develop curricula, faculty and students of hotel and restaurant management (HRM), and tourism,” a press statement of the hotel said.

“If you want to produce globally competitive students, this is one easy way of doing it,” said USC president Fr. Roderick Salazar Jr., SVD.

Philippine Agri Dep’t Bullish on Attaining 2007 Growth Target

The Philippine Department of Agriculture (DA) on Sunday expressed confidence in attaining its growth target of four to five per cent for the agricultural sector this year on the strength of higher public spending for rural infrastructure such as irrigation and postharvest facilities that are designed to further boost productivity and reverse crop wastages that traditionally undercut farm output.

Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap said the DA is pumping P3.126 billion (US$66 million) into the rehabilitation, repair and restoration of irrigation systems covering 55,000 hectares of rice lands nationwide in the first half of the year.

ICT industry in Cebu expands 300 percent in 6 years

The number of software developers in Cebu today has more than tripled since 2001, which demonstrates Cebu’s massive growth in the area of information and communication technology (ICT).

Bonifacio Belen, chairman of the ICT-Link Asia that will host the Cebu ICT 2007 International Conference and Exhibition in June, said that there are now 3,500 software developers in the province, compared to only 850 six years ago.   More …

Processed pork being served in most dinner tables in Cebu are not just from locally-grown pigs as traders are forced to buy from France, Canada and Germany to cope with huge demand for pork in the province.

Virginia Food Inc. president Felix O. Tiukinhoy Jr. said the household demand for pork in Cebu is so huge that local piggery farms have their hands full feeding the domestic supply.
