Cebu Imports Pork to Meet Huge Demand

Processed pork being served in most dinner tables in Cebu are not just from locally-grown pigs as traders are forced to buy from France, Canada and Germany to cope with huge demand for pork in the province.

Virginia Food Inc. president Felix O. Tiukinhoy Jr. said the household demand for pork in Cebu is so huge that local piggery farms have their hands full feeding the domestic supply.

The country can reposition itself as the largest global supplier of virgin coconut oil (VCO) as international cosmetics industry clamor for more supply, an official of the Philippine Coconut Authority said on Wednesday.

In a study titled “State of the Art VCO production in the Philippines” PCA Deputy Administrator Carlos Carpio said market positioning of the VCO has to be assured through quality and price competitiveness to maintain the country’s present status as the leading exporter of VCO in the world.

Cebu Implements US$11.6 MLN of Infrastructure Projects

The Cebu Provincial Government is beating the March 30 infrastructure ban in connection with the May 14 elections by bidding out P566.6 million (US$11.6 million) worth of infrastructure projects.

A huge chunk of the budget will be for the asphalting of 154.5 kilometers of provincial roads worth P495 million, improvement of 21 bridges costing P50.8 million, repair of school buildings costing P3.6 million, construction of waterworks system costing P5.9 million and riprapping works in Tudela and Poro in Camotes island worth P2.2 million.

“Everybody likes SRP because of its strategic location. It’s the gateway to the south,” he said in an interview with the press during the recent inauguration of the rehabilitated roads around SM City Cebu.

THE Bureau of Customs (BOC)-Cebu has awarded over 30 importers and exporters in the province and three others in Oriental Negros and Siquijor provinces.

In a press statement, BOC-Cebu said it has picked, for this year, Norkis Trading Group as top importer outside of the Mactan Economic Zone (MEZ) while Shemberg Marketing was named top exporter outside MEZ.

COMPUTER technology giant IBM inaugurated its new and bigger office in the midst of some of Cebu’s major business process outsourcing (BPO) firms last Thursday, signaling the company’s intention to expand not only in the province, but in the Visayas as well.

Newly appointed IBM country general manager James Velasquez said the company is “building bigger infrastructure” in Cebu, which include a part center hub and more personnel at its office at i2 Building in Asiatown IT Park, vendors and authorized service centers.
