Four writers, seven photographers and an unaccounted number of other volunteers have come up with a coffee table book that will encapsulate the history and artistry of the Catholic Church in Cebu.

“Balaanong Bahandi: Sacred Treasures of the Archdiocese of Cebu” was launched yesterday before Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal, Tourism Secretary Ace Durano, Cebu mayors, councilors, politicians and art enthusiasts.

Msgr. Carlito Pono, director of the Cathedral Museum, described the project as “a panorama of faith expression.” More…

Fiesta in Parian

The fiesta in Parian has been celebrated yearly since June 24, 1614, when the parish was created, and through the times the parish was abolished. This year, the celebration came with a glimmer of hope of a grander fiesta come 2014.

Hermano Mayor of this year’s celebration was Louie Nacorda, president of the Cofradia de San Juan de Cebu. Parian chapel president Val Sandiego made sure everything would come out smoothly — the novena prayers, the procession, which ended with fireworks. More…

Cebu tourism up 8.5% despite global crisis

Cebu posted an 8.51 percent growth in tourist arrivals despite the drop in key foreign markets at the onset of the global economic crisis last year, the Department of Tourism (DOT) said.

Tourism Undersecretary Phineas Alburo said Cebu drew close to 650,000 tourists out of the 3.13 million tourists that visited the country last year.

He said most of them were traditional visitors like Koreans, Japanese and Americans. Read more…

Two Marine Protected Areas in Cebu are among the finalists in the 12 Most Outstanding MPA Award for 2009, an award given to recognize the efforts of the different coastal municipalities in the country that “practice good governance in managing and sustaining marine protected areas.”

The recognition of the winner will be held on June 28 at the Cebu City Waterfront Hotel during the “2nd Para el Mar” that will be given by the Marine Protected Areas Support Network together with the League of the Municipalities of the Philippines. Read more…

Lapu aquarium re-opens, eyes students, tourists

Following its public announcement in March to temporarily close its facility as part of its relocation plans, the Mactan Island Aquarium Museum is now back in business.

The public aquarium soft-opened last May 31 at its new location in Barangay Maribago, Lapu-Lapu City. British marine biologist Dylan Taylor, owner and project director of the facility, said that one of the highlights at the 550-square-meter site is a 20-foot high tank that contains big sharks. Carmen Municipal Mayor Sonia Q. Pua yesterday called on all political leaders and residents of her town for unity, as they will continue the development of the town that was started by their forefathers 158 years ago.

In her State of the Municipality Address (SOMA), Pua said her triumph as the leader of the town does not depend on her alone but also to the employees who efficiently run their respective offices.

The Cebu City Tourism Commission (CCTC) is embarking on an ambitious long-term thrust to revitalize the downtown heritage area and turn it into a tourist attraction.

The commission will kick off its first heritage trail history tour on June 25, and commissioner Tetta Baad said the long term plan is to rehabilitate old buildings and uplift the overall condition of the historic downtown area. More…

Bike lanes pushed for Cebu City streets

Closing at least half of the lanes to accommodate pedestrians and bicycles may not only ease traffic but help reduce air pollution in Cebu City, an environment advocacy group said in a letter sent to city officials yesterday.

The Global Legal Action on Climate Change (GLACC) proposed that half of the city’s main roads like Osmeña Boulevard be confined for use by pedestrians and bicycles only while other roads would be allocated for public and private vehicles. More…

Cebu City opens lease on three NRA properties

Cebu group eyes Guinness dance record

The Dancesport Team Cebu City (DTCC) will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest dance class in a bid to promote Cebu as the dance capital of the world, an official of the group said.

The DTCC will try to put bring together about 4,000 people for the dance class at the Cebu City Sports Center oval on June 27, DTCC head dance instructor Loloi Rendon said. More…
