This week marks a change that finally arrived: Bill Gates is retiring from full time work from Microsoft – a company that he founded over 30 years ago, and which he lead to be the leading software company, and in the process put him as the richest man in the world for over a decade, a record which in today’s dynamic world, may be hard to eclipse.
His partial retirement was announced over 2 years ago – a turnover process that was planned and executed well over the standard 2 week or 4 weeks with most employee’s departures. Now, he will devote his time to giving away his billions through the biggest foundation in the world Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation– with an estimated over 60 billion dollars worth of money. Half of the money came from him, and the other half from his good friend, and now world’s richest man, Warren Buffett.

Something happened to Facebook in April 2008 – it stopped being the second largest social network in the world. According to Media Trend Report, Facebook garnered over 115 million unique visitors for that month, officially overtaking MySpace.

MySpace is still number 1 in the US with about 72 million members,
while Facebook has only roughly half, about 36 million. But Facebook
garnered many more international accounts, and officially grew by over
75 million members in the last 12 months, while MySpace reportedly grew by less than 10 million members.

With all the things you can do today, you can say one thing… life is never boring! Between the almost unlimited music and videos you can find in the internet, to the countless video games you can play, and the hundreds or thousands of friends you make in the social networks, you constantly try to pinch yourself that the person who can invent a way for us to have more than 24 hours a day is really the one that will get my hug.
One thing I was afraid would suffer was that my children, as a result,would read less books! TV or video is a great way to learn a lot of things, but nothing stimulates thinking and learning still more than reading. That is why I was so elated about the report that worldwide,3.13 billion books were sold in 2007, still an improvement over the 3.1 billion books sold in 2006. Although that represents only a 1 percent growth, hopefully that illustrates that reading is still a must and should not be substituted.

One of the more popular technology today is virtualization, and especially with the increase of power, it becomes even more so. Virtualization is a software that allows you to work with the computer to make it appear or work like it is several computers or servers, when in fact, it can only be one.

For instance, if you buy one big Unix server. You need to develop applications for it, so naturally you don’t want that the development of new applications will be together with the actual system that the office will use, but it is too expensive to buy 2 servers. So you slice the server so that you have a test server and a production used server, when in fact there is only one server. The magic of software makes it into 2 separate servers, so that even if there are numerous errors in the test server software, it will not affect the actual production server.

Unless you were living in the cave, you have heard lots of  talks of economic recession.  Thankfully, worldwide PC shipments  still manage to grow 14.6% to 69.5 million units in the first quarter of 2008.  Other than a  slowdown, there has been lots of talks that people use less computers because they are going towards cell phones, especially smart phones.  Well, that is like saying that camera sales will drop because cell phones have cameras too.  They say the world’s largest camera manufacturer ironically is now Nokia.  But so far, people use their cell phones to take pictures, and to do some computing, but sales of digital cameras and computers still manage well.  Most likely, there are still many things you want to do on a full computer.  Working on a spreadsheet or editing/browsing pictures is still much better on a proper monitor.

This is my 800^th article for sunstar since I started writing for it 14 years ago.  People always ask me where I get so many things to write about.  Actually, its simple – the more you read, and the more you think about what you read, the more ideas you will have to share.  I still make it part of my routine to read and scan through thousands of articles and as many books I can get every month.

The technology news is full of reports about the fact that Microsoft has decided not to pursue its bid to buy Yahoo.  After three months of negotiation, Microsoft apparently decided that the price they were asking for was too high – Microsoft offered more than 70% premium over the public stock price of Yahoo, but apparently Yahoo felt that their price was nearer almost double what it was before Microsoft started to court it.
