Smishing

by @ 11:50 pm. Filed under -BizDriven Life

There was phising (email fraud) , there was wi-phising ( fraud through wifi), there was vishing ( fraud through bogus phone numbers), and now there is smishing ( phising through cell phone text messaging) Cell phone users should watch out for text messages containing a Web site link which, when visited, could download a Trojan horse, security experts have warned. Some cell phone users have started receiving an SMS that reads: “We’re confirming you’ve signed up for our dating service. You will be charged $2/day unless you cancel your ...

Powering Down a Notebook

by @ 11:14 pm. Filed under -BizDriven Life

My wife has informed me that I have a very bad habit of shutting down the notebook which may damage the hard disk.  NOrmally I used the notebook which is configured to automatically hibernate after I shut down the lid. The problem is that I always shut down the lid, and immediately start moving the notebook ( start putting it inside the bag- while it is still in the process of hibernating).  As we may know, the process of hibernating means the computer is writing data from the memory to ...

Caps Lock

by @ 7:05 pm. Filed under -BizDriven Life

I remember long ago when there was yet no fax, texting, or email, and telegrams/telex was still the main form of communication that it would be written in all capital keys. That was then, and there was good reason for it. Because there was limited ‘bandwidth’ so to speak to transmit, so in general, they wanted the choice to be as few as possible, and during that time, a capital E was good as a small letter e. Then I read this article in Wired ...

Stress indeed is the number 1 culprit in terms of its bad effects on ones health.  Stress comes in a variety of ways and can result in myriad of symptoms. Working long hours has now been shown to be one form of stress that can affect ones health. A balance of time at work and time for relaxation is key to preserving ones health. A new study published in the September Issue of  Hypertension looked at the relationship between working long hours and high blood pressure. What Listening Really Means

by @ 9:50 am. Filed under -BizDrivenNewsletter

Listening might be a simple word but is hardly understood. More than half of the people I had talk to unconsciously defines it as doing the thing what they want to happen. This should not, apparently, listening should mean respecting the view of others but not necessarily doing it.Mind you, if you think otherwise, you will be in very big trouble.

Video from Burning Man

by @ 3:21 am. Filed under Main Blogs

I knew that traffic in Silicon Valley seemed a bit light this week. Everyone is at Burning Man. There’s a fun video site from there. I wish I was there. It just didn’t work out this year, but it’s one of the things I really want to do. One thing about Burning Man. I’m told it’s something you need to experience. Watching a little two inch video about it won’t really do it justice.

How do you keep your stuff private on WiFi networks?

by @ 2:01 am. Filed under Main Blogs

I was talking with a geek who’ll remain unnamed and he was telling me how easy it is for someone to sit at a Starbucks, slurp off the local WiFi, and recreate almost everything you do, often gaining passwords and private conversations. I saw this once at a conference where someone up on stage was showing the audience everything that was going over the WiFi networks. For instance, did you know that if you’re using many common Instant Messengers that those send your information over WiFi in plain text? I ...

Have I lost my ?blog power??

by @ 12:35 am. Filed under Main Blogs

Anand M., in India, asks “has Scoble lost his blog power?” (I linked to him and he didn’t get many visits). My read? If I ever did have blog power, it’s gone now. Digg and TechMeme have all the power now. I think Rageboy has the clue to what’s going on here (the yawning baby cracked Maryam up). I’m boring. Haven’t been linking to enough cool people and cool tech. Too much inbred inside-the-blogosphere, linking. Or, maybe, I’ve been doing too much linking and not enough first-hand-experience. Translation: not enough lists. Sorry. It’s hard ...

The Value of Teamwork

by @ 10:51 pm. Filed under -BizDrivenNewsletter

Here is a great story of teamwork. One day, the farmer was walking by and suddenly found his mule, Beau, fell on the deep farm hole. The mule having his eyes covered cannot see anything except total darkness. Wise enough, the farmer decided to drop more soil so each time he drops, his mule steps on to the soil slowly bringing him atop.Simultaneously with what the farmer is doing, he calls on

The Origin of Barong Tagalog

by @ 10:20 pm. Filed under -CeBu CeBoom CeBlog

During the Spanish occupation of the Philippines (over 300 years from 1561-1889) the barong tagalog was required by the Spanish government for Filipinos (indios) to be worn at most times to show the difference between the rich and the poor. He said that the poor who serve the rich must always be in uniform. Take their chauffeurs, maids, and employees as examples. They are in uniform to immediately distinguish them from the employers. When the Spaniards colonized the Filipinos, they had to make it abundantly clear who the boss was ...

Can you find the little duckie sign on Flickr?

by @ 9:47 pm. Filed under Main Blogs

I love the new geotagging feature on Flickr. Check out my neighborhood. Can you find the little duckie sign? Congrats to the great success Flickr has had with this new feature. Now, when will I be able to add blog posts onto a map? Oh, and is Thomas Hawk’s photography getting better and better? I love his rave about Flickr too, made even better because Thomas works for a competitor of Flickr’s.

I got my blue diode!

by @ 9:30 pm. Filed under Main Blogs

Interesting, turns out that blue diodes are gonna be tough to get this year. That’s what’s inside the Toshiba HD-DVD player I bought and what is scheduled to be inside Sony’s Playstation 3’s later this year. My brother says this is making the Xbox team look like geniuses.

Trip to Google tomorrow

by @ 9:27 pm. Filed under Main Blogs

Ahh, I see someone is asking “why is the Windows Live Writer blog banned from Google?” They are talking about that over on Channel 9 too. I doubt it’s banned. There are lots of reasons things don’t get into Google very highly. For one the search term isn’t in the title tag (which, for many searches, is more important than how many inbound links you have). For two someone notes that the HTML on Windows Live Spaces is giving lots of errors on the validators. Anyway, tomorrow I’m gonna visit Matt Cutts ...

Bloggers, Vloggers, and Podcasters: do NOT buy this book!

by @ 9:04 pm. Filed under Main Blogs

Why don’t I want you to buy this book? Because it contains the secrets to beating me at Technorati (and how to get Shelley Powers and Steve Gillmor to link to you on the same day! Although with Gillmor you really don’t want him to link to you, trust me on this). It is the best aggregation of tips for how to get noticed that I’ve found anywhere. I hope all my competitors don’t buy this book and I am buying it for everyone at PodTech. Disclaimer, I liked this ...
