Do you watch numb3rs?  For the last two days, i was able to have time to watch the TV show season series where the two main characters are a FBI agent (Don Eppes) and his younger brother (Charlie), a very clever mathematician. The show is based on the idea that crimes can be solved with numbers. In each episode, Charlie uses different mathematic techniques to find information regarding some crime scene. One of which is how they solved the crime in phishing.

“Phishing is an electronic way for scam artists to steal your identity and your money. If you’ve got a computer and/or an e-mail account, you’re a potential target. Please be aware of at least two attempts to get at your information.  Some phishing e-mails threaten a dire consequence if you don’t respond. The messages direct you to a Web site that looks just like a legitimate organization’s site. But it isn’t. It’s a bogus site whose sole purpose is to trick you into divulging your personal information so the operators can steal your identity and run up bills or commit crimes in your name.”

Here are some tips to avoid phishing thing:

• If you get an e-mail or pop-up message that asks for personal or financial information, do not reply. And don’t click on the link in the message, either.
• Use anti-virus software and a firewall and keep them up to date. Some
phishing e-mails contain software that can harm your computer or track your
activities.
• Be cautious about opening any attachment or downloading any files from e-mails you receive, regardless of who sent them. These files can contain viruses or other software that can weaken your computer’s security.
