This week marks a change that finally arrived: Bill Gates is retiring from full time work from Microsoft – a company that he founded over 30 years ago, and which he lead to be the leading software company, and in the process put him as the richest man in the world for over a decade, a record which in today's dynamic world, may be hard to eclipse. His partial retirement was announced over 2 years ago – a turnover process that was planned and executed well over the standard 2 ...

Something happened to Facebook in April 2008 – it stopped being the second largest social network in the world. According to Media Trend Report, Facebook garnered over 115 million unique visitors for that month, officially overtaking MySpace.MySpace is still number 1 in the US with about 72 million members, while Facebook has only roughly half, about 36 million. But Facebookgarnered many more international accounts, and officially grew by over75 million members in the last 12 months, while MySpace reportedly grew by less than 10 million members.

The good news and the bad news about technology is that there are always great websites that makes us wastes time every week!An entertaining site is the FAIL blog ,which you can gleam from http://failblog.org. I shows various kinds of failed endeavors, and it is entertaining and hilarious. When I chanced upon it, it was a straightforward simple blog, but now people can now tag, dig, and do all kinds of things. Based on the comments there, it is a very popular blog, and it also has now ...

With all the things you can do today, you can say one thing… life is never boring! Between the almost unlimited music and videos you can find in the internet, to the countless video games you can play, and the hundreds or thousands of friends you make in the social networks, you constantly try to pinch yourself that the person who can invent a way for us to have more than 24 hours a day is really the one that will get my hug. One thing I was afraid would ...

One of the more popular technology today is virtualization, and especially with the increase of power, it becomes even more so. Virtualization is a software that allows you to work with the computer to make it appear or work like it is several computers or servers, when in fact, it can only be one.For instance, if you buy one big Unix server. You need to develop applications for it, so naturally you don't want that the development of new applications will be together with the actual system that the ...

Unless you were living in the cave, you have heard lots of  talks of economic recession.  Thankfully, worldwide PC shipments  still manage to grow 14.6% to 69.5 million units in the first quarter of 2008.  Other than a  slowdown, there has been lots of talks that people use less computers because they are going towards cell phones, especially smart phones.  Well, that is like saying that camera sales will drop because cell phones have cameras too.  They say the world's largest camera manufacturer ...

This is my 800th article for sunstar since I started writing for it 14 years ago.  People always ask me where I get so many things to write about.  Actually, its simple – the more you read, and the more you think about what you read, the more ideas you will have to share.  I still make it part of my routine to read and scan through thousands of articles and as many books I can get every month. The technology news is full of reports about the fact ...

by @ 11:18 am. Filed under FrontPage, -Wired Desktop

I am in a conference right now on proper power management, as well as management of servers and data centers, and the main thing now that is being discussed is the high cost now of power and cooling. There is a quote that I like which states the POWER IN EQUALS HEAT OUT.  This just goes to say that the more powerful computers you have ( just like car), the more electricity it consumes ( or fuel in cars ) and the more heat ( ...

I have just published a book – fulfilling a life long dream to be an author.  I have always love to write, and I have actually written for Sunstar for 14 years, and nearing my 800th article in the paper.    I have also done  thousands of  writeups in my blog, in various forums, and social networks,  and I probably am nearing my 500,000th  piece of email after more than 20 years of computers.

Intel will soon be releasing a new processor, and it is called Atom, and you will easily know why.  The chip is only less than 25 square millimeter in size (actual size for unmounted chips is probably smaller than your fingernail), and will consume only 0.6 watts to 2.5 watts. In fact, it is so small that Intel supposedly can make 2,500 of these processors on a single 300 millimeter wafer.  However, it packs over 47 million transistors each, and the power is ...

I was attending a business meeting, when the topic started to shift to open source.  And one of the attendees started saying, " of course, Wilson Ng has been a Microsoft advocate and partner, and we do expect him to oppose open source."  I grimaced and shrugged.  I have often been characterized as such.  But I believe that I have grown old enough in the industry that I have stopped looking at things as black and white, and start to be more circumspect. The number 1 application  of people using computers now is email and for cell phones it is texting.  We have been texting and emailing for well over 10 years now, and although there has been a lot of arguments that there are better and faster and more efficient ways to collaborate and work together than this, these 2 fundamental applications just kept growing.

I am sure many of you are members of what is called ‘mailing lists’.  These are group discussion mails, which allows a group of people, let us say anywhere from 5 to thousands to subscribe.  If anybody wants to announce or comment on anything, they just send or reply mail to the mailing list, and it automatically gets distributed to all that subscribe to that. These allows discussions to be easier.  Some mailing lists are open to all subscribers, and everybody can send mail to everybody.  Some mailing lists are maintained, and only moderators or those authorized will ...

I  am going over a report from CNET of what are the top global technology brands now for 2007.  This report is good because it allows you to understand trends, especially on consumer and corporate buying preferences.  Needless to say, the brands that are strong are normally the most preferred and strongest in terms of marketability. A complete report can be gleaned from http://www.news.com/8301-10784_3-9813940-7.html?part=rss&subj=news&tag=2547-1_3-0-5 ).
